Using Yoga For Meditation And Exercise

Yoga is a form of meditation that has been around for centuries. It came about through  the traditions of  Buddhism and Hinduism. The religious aspect of yoga still exists but in some cultures it is now used as a form of exercise. You will find that the stretches and strength building exercises can work with your self image. You are able to burn fat, increase your flexibility, and also build muscles. There are lots of other exercises that are combinable with yoga.  By using yoga with other cardiovascular exercise, you will be able to make your body healthier than ever.

Yoga, traditionally, is a routine of exercise that will rejuvenate the body. Meaning that even though yoga is a fairly difficult workout, it should make you energized as opposed to draining your body and making you feel tired. Therefore, if you are pairing yoga with other forms of exercise, do yoga first, using it as a warm-up exercise. Warm-up exercises are a must before exercising.  It loosens your muscles so they won’t be prone to injury.

Yoga teaches you breathing techniques that help calm the spirit and focus the mind. With good breathing techniques you will be able to breathe fully and there will be more oxygen going to your brain and body.  By practicing yoga, you will be able to do cardiovascular exercises for a longer period of time.

Since yoga helps with increased flexibility, injuries while doing other sports and/or exercises may be prevented. Yoga can be viewed as an entire exercise regimen focused on stretching muscles, thus allowing you to find your limits. This is important when practicing any sort of physical activity.  Always speak with your doctor when you are starting any exercise routine.

The Art of Yoga

Yoga is becoming a part of life for many people. It is a way that you can integrate body poses and breathing exercises with added meditation to give you peace of mind.  It seems to make everything right with the world.

Meditation comes from intense concentration. The person focuses on a single object so intensively that they think of nothing besides the awareness of that object. In yoga meditation is the highest point of the Eight Limbs of Yoga.

These “eight limbs” define yoga as a lifestyle:

  • your attitude with the world around you
  • your attitudes towards yourself
  • physical posturing
  • breathing exercises
  • withdrawing the senses
  • concentrating
  • contemplating
  • enlightenment

Meditation calms the mind and offers many health benefits way before enlightenment. Regular meditation will help reduce stress and anxiety. It can also lower your blood pressure and decrease your risk of a heart attack. Side effects of yoga are improvement of  concentration, clarity of thought, and can release your creative side.

With some research, yoga will help with cognitive, emotional, and sensory data of the brain. Meditation may also slow natural shrinkage of the frontal cortex due to aging. Try meditating for 40 minutes a day. Actually, most change happens in the brain’s right half.

Meditation isn’t easy, clearing the mind of extraneous thought is very difficult, and clearing it of all thought is even more difficult. It will take time and hard work in order to learn how to do meditate.

To begin, you will want to sit somewhere quiet, with your back and head straight. You will need learn some basic breathing exercises first.  First,  close your eyes, breathe in through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Focus on your breath, be sure to get cool air to enter through your nose and the warm air out your mouth. Redirect all of your thoughts and just focus on the warm air leaving. You should start off with some short meditations that last a few minutes. Most beginners will start off counting their breaths so that they can focus on the breathing, if you do this  only count to four and then start over again.

Acupuncture For Fibromyalgia

There still is no cure for fibromyalgia even though it affects thousands of people.  Treatments exist only for temporary relief.  Symptoms are pain in your muscles which also causes pain in your joints leading to stiffness, problems sleeping and fatigue.  You will find that Chinese Acupuncture is one of the best medicines for these symptoms.

Acupuncture has minimal side effects and patients who have the procedure usually leave the doctor’s office feeling much better or at least no worse off than they were before.  The needles are used to stimulate the body.  They are the thickness of  a hair so you may feel a slight pinch as they are inserted, but when the procedure is done properly it is both safe and painless.  That is why it is so important to find a professional acupuncturist.

Patients with fibromyalgia receive a specific treatment for their condition.  Not only will the doctor use needles but, sometimes, cupping and warming techniques.  Cupping is a form of suction.  Small heated cups, usually glass or bamboo, are placed on the skin to begin suction.  They are usually left on the body about 15 minutes, sometimes longer.  Today, some doctors also may use a suctioning pump to do this process.

Research shows that cupping has a lot of real benefits and is not just an old wive’s tale.  It has been shown to stimulate the blood vessels in the affected areas.  This procedure seems to draw out the old blood settling in a bruise or area of pain and make room for new blood and a fresh supply of oxygen.  Since it is creating a better environment for the area having pain tissues begin to repair themselves right away.  Cupping also seems to open the lungs, thus releasing the toxins through pores in your body and through your breathing.  The procedure also draws cold and dampness from your system so it is believed that you obtain a healthier body.

Cupping is not for everyone.  If you are pregnant you should be very careful.  Cupping should not be done where open sores or wounds exist or where there is an excess of hair.  When you first begin cupping you will notice bruising.  This should go away in about a week.

Acupuncture is something that may help with fibromyalgia but there is little proof of this except for patients opinions.  Some patients believe the procedure works in relieving the pain and therefore is the only relief.  Before trying to find an acupuncturist you may want to talk to your family doctor and get their opinion.  They should be able to giveyou all the information you will need, not only to find the best acupuncturist, but also about the procedure itself.

Acupuncture Along With Good Nutrition

Acupuncture along with good nutrition is becoming a very common practice right now, at least more so than before.  If you start a new diet it can help with the way acupuncture will react to your body.  Look at acupuncture as a way to have a new and healthier life by feeling better and possibly extending your life.

Talk to your doctor if you are going to go on a new diet.  Ask your acupuncturist too.  They can suggest foods that will help you get the most benefit from the procedure.  They may recommend herbs, a certain tea to drink or take herbal supplements.  Be sure to tell them of anything you are allergic to so you will not be given anything that may hurt you.  Herbal medications have been proven to work with certain diseases.

Improvement in your digestion of food can be attributed to diet, herbs and acupuncture by helping your body use food in the best food.  This can be done by chewing your food completely before swallowing.  Do not watch television while eating.  This will help you eat much slower and enjoy each bite instead of swallowing whole or  barely chewed and also stop the possibility of choking.

Even if they don’t give you any specific things to eat or drink you will benefit greatly from the acupuncture and a new healthy lifestyle.

How Can You Locate An Acupuncturist?

Acupuncture has become a very popular treatment for health related issues of all kinds. Stress and anxiety, along with all sorts of body pains, can be relieved.  Acupuncture is a treatment that can be risky, but with the sterilization of needles, and a trained, licensed acupuncturist, you will be able to relieve your pain safely.

There are several ways to locate a good acupuncturist:

  • word of mouth - you would be surprised at the number of people who have regular acupuncture treatments.  For some, it’s like going to a chiropractor to get your back realigned.  By asking your friends or family, you will be able to  find one that  they really like or maybe they have seen one that they did’nt really like.  Both are important to note.  This is the beauty of word of mouth; there is an endless network of opinions and resources.
  • your doctor - if  he recommends this form of treatment he will be able to recommend a good acupuncturist.
  • online – because most states require acupuncturists to be licensed, there is a database of competent acupuncture practitioners online. If you look up the American Association of Oriental Medicine, they will be listed nationwide. This association is comprised of state and medical boards.  Besides the nationwide search, there are also links to each state licensing department, where you may be able to find a  licensed practitioners near you.

When looking for an acupuncturist, you will want to make sure that you see their credentials. You may also want to arrange a meeting to learn about how they go about the procedure and how the professional end of the process is handled. This will put you more at ease with the procedure.

Exactly How Safe Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a very popular and profitable form of medicine.  Exactly how safe is acupuncture?  Millions of people will use acupuncture to treat all of their health issues. It can be used for back pain, headaches, and sleeping disorders.

Needles being inserted into the body is the main concern of most people who are not familiar with acupuncture.  Acupuncturists who are licensed must pass state-established training standards to become certified, and many neurologists and doctors working in physical medicine are becoming certified in order to perform acupuncture as a treatment option for their patients.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of needles only by licensed practitioners.  There have been a few complaints logged at the FDA about acupuncture, such as concerns and complaints of non-sterile needles that can end up spreading infection and disease. Be sure you inquire about the sterilization of needles with your acupuncturist. Professional acupuncturists will certainly work with sterile needles to ensure client safety.

There is the risk of a needle being inserted too deeply, which could cause organs to be punctured. This risk is very small although a  few cases of needles puncturing organs have been found.  However, this sort of situation can be avoided by undergoing treatment with a licensed acupuncture practitioner.  In addition, if you feel serious pain when the needles are inserted be sure to tell the practitioner, because it is said that most people do not even feel the needles being inserted into the pressure points.

If you use a  qualified acupuncture practitioner that has been certified and has some experience, there should be no pain or risk, and you may find that your health issues will become a lot better with the use of this form of medicine.  Millions of people have tried this procedure and boast of great success.

What Is The Acupuncture Tradition

Acupuncture  is a practice beginning in China and can be traced back over eight thousands years. It can be found in areas of Asia, Japan, and Korea. It is considered to be a form of medicine whereby needles are inserted under the skin in certain areas of the body to control pain.  Recently it has been recognized in the western world, particularly the United Staes, as a legitimate form of medication. More doctors are recommending acupuncture to help with certain pains and issues, but it is still used in conjunction with modern medicine.

Traditionally, the Chinese saw the body as having several different working energy systems and run by the organs of our bodies.  At one time, disease was seen as a disruption in the body system.  The vital energy that runs through our bodies is known in acupuncture as “qi”.  This is what acupuncturists seek to heal through their work.  Qi (the energy flow) is blocked by pain.  Acupuncture has been said to unblock this pain.  From history acupuncturists claim, “no pain, no blockage; no blockage no pain.  This means that  if you can end the pain, the blockage will go away, and if you end the blockage your pain will go away.

Accupuncture’s major success of acceptance into society was first found during the Huang Di (The Yellow Emperor) Dynasty.  It was then that the ruler discussed medical traditions with his doctor. These dialogues became part of what we now know as The Nei Jing, and it is the earliest medical text found in Asia. It includes two sections—anatomy, disease, diagnosis, and the cosmos. The second is the aspects of acupuncture. During the 7th century AD, with the Sui and Tang Dynasties, acupuncture charts and texts were introduced to schools as a form of medicine. The techniques were slowly refined, and during the Ming Dynasty, in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, major importance was established in the field with western medicine becoming less important in the early twentieth century.

When it comes to the tradition of acupuncture, it prevailed in the 1950’s and doctors used it along with modern medicine.  Around the 1960s the practice was highly researched throughout the entire world. With the new millennium, acupuncture is now accepted by western medicine and has become a way of treatment.

The Importance of Vitamin B-12

There are several vitamins your body needs to survive.  Without Vitamin B12 our metabolism would be affected and there would be problems with the forming of our red blood cells. These red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body, maintain the nervous systems, and send messages to and from the brain to tell us important  things.

As I noted in a previous post, vitamins fall into two general categories, fat-soluble vitamins which can be stored in the body and, in some cases, produced by the body.  Because of this, deficiency is very rare.   The other category is water-soluble vitamins which are not stored in the body.  Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin and can be stored but ,in some cases ,it cannot be properly used in the body.  Therefore, we must be eating it every day. You can find good levels of vitamin B 12 in eggs, poultry, beef, pork, shellfish, and dairy products, especially milk.  And,  if you are eating a healthy, balanced diet, you should’nt have to worry about having a  lower or higher than normal level of vitamin B12 in the body.

If you have special dietary needs or medical conditions, vitamin supplements may be needed.  Because vitamin B12 is one of the few vitamins that can be stored in the body, extreme deficiency is very rare.  However, if your body cannot use vitamin B12 properly or absorb it from foods in the intestinal tract, you may need vitamin supplements to help your body. If you believe that you are not getting enough vitamin B12, you should talk to your doctor and he or she can help you find the right vitamin supplements to take.

Vegans are especially prone to low amounts of this vitamin since most of the vitamin B12 we get in our diets is found in meat.  If you don’t get enough vitamin B12, you could develop a condition known as pernicious anemia. Symptoms include numbness and tingling in your arms and legs, weakness, loss of balance, and other neurological symptoms.  If you are worried about developing pernicious anemia, you should talk to your doctor about beginning to take vitamin B12 supplements today.

Do You Hate To Exercise – Here Is Help

If you’re anything like me, you wouldn’t say that exercising is your favorite thing to do. In fact, some people just hate to exercise. But, exercising is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, and without it you definitely cannot lose weight. There are, however, certain tips for learning to love exercising.

First, try finding some exercises that you like to do. You should be working out all of your body, but if you absolutely hate doing a certain kind of exercise, then look for another one instead. You don’t have to do crunches to strengthen your core, lunges to work out your lower body, or  run—you can replace these exercises with cycling or swimming. Find the exercise you like to do and your workout will seem easier and much more enjoyable.

You can also find other activities you like to do and make exercises out of them. For example, if you like working in your garden, try creating exercises surrounding raking or mow your yard with a push mower instead of a riding mower.  If you enjoy the winter weather, you can try ice skating or sledding.  No matter what you like to do, you can always find a way to turn it into a fun exercise. Thanks to the introduction of the Wii and dance games,  you can even play video games and exercise at the same time.

Get  a partner and work out together.  This will help you stay motivated even if you do hate to exercise. With a partner, you can also play things like tennis or challenge one another to meet certain goals. Trainers can also provide this, as well as show you new and fun exercises to keep you from being  bored or feeling overwhelmed at the gym.

Try taking some classes. Exercise classes are a great way to meet new people.  You can learn new exercises, stay motivated, and just have fun. Most gyms offer low-cost or free exercise classes with membership or check with your local YMCA.

If you hate to exercise, staying motivated can be hard.  But, if you set goals and don’t quit, you will feel and look much better. Exercise and dieting go together if you really want to lose weight.  Have you ever heard the saying “if you are overweight and flabby you will be skinny and flabby”?  This sure seems logical, doesn’t it?  Make exercise fun and it won’t seem like such a chore.

Anxiety Disorders and Depression

Anxiety disorders cover a number of disorders, such as panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social phobia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.  However, all of these medical conditions can lead to even more health and emotional problems, so treatment  may be necessary in a number of areas.

Depression is a medical condition that may develop. While many people carelessly use the term depression to describe an intense sadness, it is more than just a day of being upset about something. Depression can completely stop you from living your life. If you are worried that you may be depressed, see your doctor immediately.

There are a number of symptoms associated with depression that you may experience. Some of these symptons are loss of appetite, increase in appetite, having no sexual energy, muscle aches and pains, inability to concentrate, feeling afraid or confused, being easily angered, not caring about things you used to love, not being able to pinpoint why you feel sad, hating yourself, and constantly thinking about death.  If you are experiencing three or more of these symptoms on a daily basis, you should see your doctor right away.

In the worse case scenario, depression can lead to thoughts of suicide. If you have thought about killing yourself, even once, you should get help right away. Tell someone you love or call 9-1-1 or a local hotline for support. If you cannot do these things, at least go to a public place. Give yourself some time to think about things before making any decisions.

Remember, depression is a real medical illness. Several million Americans suffer from depression at some point or another, and it can affect any age, gender, race, or religion. Treatment for depression includes medication that inhibit certain receptors in the brain or therapy to help you talk about the things that are making you depressed.

In the end, it is important to realize that there is help and you can feel better. Being depressed is nothing to be ashamed of, it is a medical problem.  Modern medicine makes it possible for you to overcome your depression and your anxiety disorders in order to live a healthy life.  Don’t continue to be unhappy and hurting the people who love you.  Talk about it to someone.
